”Introduction
TAKASHI MIIKE has a cult following abroad for his films: "AUDITION" and "ICHI THE KILLER." He chose "IMPRINT" for his debut film for the U.S. The film is based on the novel by Shimako Iwai, who won two literary awards for this novel. Because the story is a scary pillow talk dealing with an ominous Japanese old custom, many considered that the novel cannnot be adapted for a movie. Daisuke Tengan who wrote "Audition" was summoned to adapt it for screenplay in English being faithful to the novel. Toyomichi Kurita who has been working in the U.S. is in charge of cinematography and Michiko Kitamura who made costumes for "ICHI THE KILLER" and "MEZON DO HIMIKO" worked for this film in order to create the scent of the Meiji era that is not necessary true to history. Their collaboration brings magnificently colorful images... Miike's unique perspective is brought to the range of art. Billy Drago who played a bad guy in "The Untouchables" plays a writer named Chris from the States. Chris wanders around Japan and visits a brothel for the poor on the island of a river. Chris was looking for a girl called "Komomo." He couldn't find her, but the girl (Yuuki Kudo from "MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA") he met there told him that she knew her and she started telling him her past. That was a beginning of a frightening night.
